CAFTA Misses January 1 Implementation Date

|

The Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) failed to go into effect on January 1, 2006 as was originally intended by the Bush administration and the United States. Many of the countries involved in the deal have failed to comply with CAFTA’s requirements on the treatment of foreign corporations, telecommunications laws, and custom laws. Additionally, Costa Rica has not yet passed approved the agreement, while other countries such as the Dominican Republic and El Salvador have announced that they will not be ready to enter CAFTA for months, due in large part to opposition in national legislative bodies skeptical of passing laws changing intellectual property, services, and investment regulations.
