The top 150 political action committees (PACs) in Michigan raised $51.9 million in the 2006 election cycle according to numbers released yesterday by the Michigan Campaign Finance Network. This total was a 55% increase over the amounts raised in 2002 and 2004, when the top 150 PACs raised $33.2 million and $33.4 million respectively. Of the PACs, the top 10 PACs raised $26.5 million or half the total amount, led by the biggest PAC in Michigan history, the Coalition for Progress, which raised $5,4660,077 with the majority coming from the Stryker family. The PACs represent an assortment of interests ranging from political parties to corporations, raising questions about how the voices of ordinary citizens in Michigan will be heard amidst the growing influx of PAC cash.
