Rick Kessler on Proposed Changes to Federal Immigration Policy

|

On this week’s episode of Catalyst Radio, attorney and immigrant rights activist Rick Kessler discussed proposed changes to federal immigration policy and how those changes will impact the West Michigan community (mp3). According to Kessler, House bill HR 4437 criminalizes immigration and was passed due to xenophobia and racism invoked by Republican representatives who sought to blame economic problems on immigration rather than discussing globalization and other such policies that have resulted in job loss. The proposed change has spurred a variety of organizing efforts in Grand Rapids, including a meeting next Saturday and an upcoming rally at the Federal Building. It is also worth noting that Representative Vern Ehlers, a Republican representing Grand Rapids, voted for the legislation.
