Around the country, antiwar protests have been held today and yesterday to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the United States invasion of Iraq. Yesterday, large protests were held in Washington DC and San Francisco. In both cases, the protests were significantly different from the anniversary protests in preceding years. In Washington DC, United for Peace and Justice called for decentralized direct actions and facilitated several civil disobedience and direct actions in downtown Washington. These included protests at the Internal Revenue Service, the White House, a military recruiting center, and various corporate offices connected to the war. In San Francisco, protests were organized by Direct Action to Stop the War. Direct Action to Stop the War used decentralized direct actions and protests to shutdown the city of San Francisco when the war began in 2003. The protests yesterday targeted war profiteers and military recruiters and featured a similar open framework that allowed people to plug-in as they saw fit.
Protests also continued here in West Michigan. The newly formed Grand Valley SDS held a protest on GVSU's Allendale campus, while students at Aquinas College organized a walkout for today.
