At last week's House Ways and Means Committee Hearing on CAFTA, Representative Sander Levin of Michigan announced that he is introducing a resolution seeking the release of a report prepared by the International Labor Rights Fund (ILRF) assessing Central American labor laws for the Labor Department. Levin, who has been seeking the report for over a year, has charged that the Labor Department is suppressing the report because it contradicts the Bush administration's claims about Central American labor laws. The report reveals that labor laws in Central American deviate greatly from the core standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO). Whereas the Bush administration has argued that the labor laws comply with ILO standards and that the only problem is with enforcement, Levin and other congressional opponents of CAFTA have identified twenty specific areas where DR-CAFTA countries' labor laws fall short of ILO standards.
