Two Representatives Announce Opposition to CAFTA; Two Democrats to Announce Support

|

Last week, two Representatives, Jose E. Serrano of New York (read his statement to the press) and Maxine Waters of California, publicly announced their opposition to CAFTA. While most Democrats oppose the deal, there are currently four Democrats in the House--Henry Cuellar of Texas, Norm Dicks of Washington, William Jefferson of Louisiana, and Jim Moran of Virginia who have announced that they support the agreement. Additionally, Representatives Solomon Ortiz and Silvestre Reyes, both of Texas, are leaning towards supporting the agreement and may announce their support soon. This would place the total number of Democratic votes for CAFTA at six. House Republicans need approximately twenty Democratic votes in order to secure passage of the agreement.
