The United States' death toll in Iraq has passed 3,500, with the most recent numbers showing that 3,504 soldiers have been killed. Of the 27 deaths this month, 4 have been soldiers from Michigan. In the past week, soldiers from Grand Rapids, Jackson, Charlotte, and Dearborn Heights have been killed in Iraq. According to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count website, at least 135 soldiers from Michigan have been killed in Iraq. The same website lists the total number of US wounded at 25,830.

Along with the United States soldiers wounded in Iraq, it is essential to remember that hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been killed as a result of the war and ongoing occupation. The most recent credible estimate placed the number at more than 655,000, while the United Nations has reported that 5,000 people are dying per month in Iraq due to ongoing violence. This number is the same as the 5,000 children per month that were dying under the sanctions regime in the 1990s.
