According to a communique from Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation has declared its forces on red alert. While it is unclear what prompted the alert, the statement says that the EZLN is grouping their fighters together, temporarily stopping all broadcasts of Radio Insurgente and pulling out of villages they govern. The statement said, however, that all of the basic community health services provided by the Zapatistas would continue. No reason was given for the issuance of the communique. The last time the group declared a similar "red alert" was eight years ago when paramilitary forces massacred 45 people in the village of Acteal in 1997.
