A new study released today by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies estimates that some 39,000 Iraqis have been killed as a direct result of combat or armed violence since the US-led invasion. The number is significantly higher than the 22,787 to 25,814 deaths reported by Iraq Body Count. The new report builds off of numbers compiled by the British medical journal, The Lancet, that estimated 100,000 Iraqis had died as a result of the invasion. The estimate of deaths solely as a result of combat or armed violence was achieved by re-examining the data used for The Lancet study and classifying the cause of death. The numbers are contained within the Institute's annual small arms study.
