A recent terror alert issued by the United States government, which originally garnered a significant amount of coverage in the corporate media for its unprecedented level of specificity, is now being reported to have been based on pre-9/11 intelligence. In addition, other claims--such as the possibility of terrorists recently conducting "practice" operations in the United States--has been proven to be false.
In response to this latest alert, some are beginning to openly question the timing of these warnings. Last month, a "terror alert" was issued in advance of the Democratic National Convention, raising questions about whether the alert was used to provide a pretext for restricting protest. With the most recent alert, people are pointing out how Bush uses the terror alerts to promote a sense of general fear that may help his reelection prospects.
