The Greater Grand Rapids Food Systems Council (GGRFSC) has posted an online version of their West Michigan FRESH Guide for Local Food. The guide, promoting the purchase and use of locally grown foods, lists a variety of farms, farmers markets, grocery stores, co-ops, and other places where locally grown foods can be obtained. According to statistics cited on their website, most food travels an average of 1,500 to 2,500 miles before it reaches the table. GGRFSC promotes locally grown food as it is better for the environment by reducing packaging and shipping, helps promote health by purchasing from trusted growers, strengthens the local economy by keeping money within the community, and supporters family farms instead of commercial “agribusiness.”
The guide is available either as a PDF file or as a searchable database.
