Tonight citizens around the country will host vigils urging President George W. Bush to meet with Cindy Sheehan. Cindy Sheehan, founder of the group Gold Star Families for Peace, has been camping outside of President Bush’s Crawford, Texas ranch for two weeks demanding that she get a meeting with him to discuss the lies used to justify the invasion of Iraq. Sheehan’s son was killed in Iraq on April 6, 2004 and she previously met with Bush in June of 2004. Since that time evidence has shown that the war was based on lies and consequently, Sheehan is now demanding that the United States leave Iraq. Hundreds of people have joined her camp outside of Bush’s ranch and the camp will be moving closer to the ranch later today.
Here in Grand Rapids, a vigil in solidarity with Sheehan will take place at 7:30pm tonight at Monument Park (the northeast corner of Fulton and Division). The vigil is being facilitated by MoveOn, and according to event details posted on their site as of 11:00am, 164 people have registered to attend the vigil.
