A survey released yesterday by the Citadel—a military college that began accepting women only ten years ago—found that almost 20% of female cadets at the school have been sexually assaulted since enrolling. There were 27 sexual assaults documented in the survey, with 17 of those never being reported to authorities with women in half of the unreported cases stating that they feared ostracism, harassment, or ridicule if they disclosed such the assaults. All of the assaults included unwanted touching with sixteen involving unwanted sexual penetration or oral sex. Most of the assaults took place on campus and involved other cadets. In addition, sixty-eight percent of women surveyed experienced one or more instances of sexual harassment ranging from jokes to offensive remarks.
The survey comes within a week of two studies that revealed sexual misconduct involving military recruiters. An Associated Press story published earlier this week found that 80 military recruiters have been disciplined for sexual misconduct in the past year while a government report found a 50% increase in “abuses” by recruiters, including sexual assault.
