After a week of mass arrests, there are currently at least 700 protestors being held inside New York City's Pier 57 jail. The city has defied multiple court orders and is holding people beyond the 24-hour limit while a judge has ruled that the city is in contempt of court and must pay $1,000 for each of the 470 protestors that should have been released by a court mandated time.
Conditions are poor in the jail [pictures / report] as numerous calls from arrestees broadcasted today on Democracy Now indicate. It has also been reported that cells are overcrowded and floors are covered with oil residude resulting in medical problems for some detainees.
