In a Grand Rapids Press article about Vice President Cheney's visit tomorrow to Grand Rapids, West Michigan representative Vern Ehlers is quoted saying that the Iraqi government has failed to achieve political reconciliation. Ehlers, who earlier this week announced that General Petraeus' testimony appears to show progress in Iraq, said in the Press that "it appears the bigger problem is getting the Iraqi government to cooperate."
Ehlers' statement is similar to those made this week by Michigan Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow. Both Senators have suggested that the Iraqi government's unwillingness to make political compromises is contributing to the violence in Iraq. Like Michigan's Senators, Ehlers made no mention of the United States' role in motivating further violence in the country.
