GRCMC Action Alert on State Threats to Public Access

|

The Grand Rapids Community Media Center (GRCMC) has posted an action alert on their website in response to two recent bills introduced in the Michigan legislature. House Bill 5237 and Senate Bill 754 would both amend the Michigan Telecommunications Act that expires at the end of 2005. The House bill would implement significant limitations on local governments wishing to build fiber networks, wireless hotspots, or provide high-speed broadband Internet and other telecommunications technology. The Senate bill, which so far does not restrict local governments capacity to provide telecommunications technology and infrastructure, is susceptible to such amendments as it works its way through the Senate.

People are encouraged to contact their state Representatives and Senators, either by writing letters, or by the preferred method of calling or faxing due to the urgent timetable.
