On Monday, Vice President Dick Cheney announced the promotion of two aides into key positions in his office. Longtime Cheney friends and staffers David Addington and John Hannah were promoted to be Cheney’s Chief of Staff and National Security Advisor, respectively, replacing the indicted I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby. Addington, who has been linked to the leaking of CIA agent Valarie Plame’s name, also played a key role in formulating the Bush administration’s position that the Geneva Convention against torture did not apply to the “war on terror” with Addington helping to draft a memo by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales arguing that terrorism “renders obsolete Geneva’s strict limitations on questioning of enemy prisoners and renders quaint some of its provisions.” National Security Advisor John Hannah has also played a controversial role in the “war on terror” with information from the now discredited Iraqi National Congress about Iraq’s alleged weapons of mass destruction being passed through him into the White House.
