According to a news release by Democracy for Metro Detroit, a progressive grassroots political action organization unofficially affiliated with Democracy for America, electronic voting machines used across Michigan are vulnerable to hacking and manipulation. The group is calling for random, hand counted audits to be conducted in Michigan in order to circumvent any voting irregularities. In light of concerns over problems with electronic voting, 14 states have committed to conducting hand counted audits. The machines in question—the Diebold AV-OS—is used in 1,224 Michigan precincts and serves 1,727,131 registered voters. According to a recent report compiled by a research team at the University of Connecticut, the machine can easily be hacked or tampered with, therefore potentially allowing votes to be altered. Democracy for Metro Detroit also links to a series of photos taken by the Michigan Election Reform Alliance that show a Diebold AV-OS machine can be opened and have its memory card removed using simple tools found in most homes. Democcracy for Metro Detroit has also expressed concerns about the ES&S M100 that serves over 4.1 million voters in 2,961 precincts.
