Grand Rapids area Representative Vernon Ehlers voted in favor of the United States-Peru Free Trade Agreement (Peru FTA). The bill--which had drawn criticism from labor and environmental organizations--was passed by a margin of 285-132. By voting support of the Peru FTA, Ehlers extended his record of support for neoliberal trade agreements. Since taking office in 1993, Ehlers has voted for the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), for "fast track authority," privileged trade status for China, and for the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade that formed the World Trade Organization (WTO). Ehlers has also expressed support for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Holland area Representative Peter Hoekstra was the only Republican in Michigan's congressional delegation that voted against the agreement, citing concerns that it would allow "unfair competition" from Peru. Democratic Representatives Dingell and Levin voted in favor of the Peru FTA.
