At its meeting yesterday, the Grand Rapids City Commission began discussing ways for the City to regulate so-called "adult entertainment" or "sexploitation" by providing strict guidelines for how such clubs would operate. The new resolution drafted by the City Attorney's office would ban “all-nude entertainment," would require strippers to perform on stages at least 18 inches off the floor and sixteen feet from customers, and would prohibit any physical contact between employees and customers. Moreover, the new resolution would affect existing businesses and would give them 180 days to comply with the new regulations. Michael London, owner of the Showgirl Galleria and Sensations, has voiced his objection to the resolution and has hinted that the local sex entertainment industry will likely attempt to fight the resolution.
The resolution is being discussed largely at the behest of the Black Hills Citizens for a Better Community, a citizens group that has been organizing against the Showgirl Galleria "adult entertainment complex" that will be opening soon in downtown Grand Rapids. The Black Hills Citizens for a Better Community has already obtained a resolution from the City Commission condemning "adult entertainment," but that resolution was purely symbolic and has no capacity to regulate businesses.
