Court Orders Affirmative Action Proposal on 2006 Ballot

|

The Michigan Court of Appeals yesterday ordered the Secretary of State to place the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI) on the 2006 state ballot. The controversial proposal that would prohibit affirmative action programs in university admission and government hiring was denied a place on the ballot last week when the Board of State Canvassers refused to put the issue on the ballot despite a previous court order. According to articles appearing in the media, the two main organizations opposing the initiative—One United Michigan and The Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration & Immigrant Rights and Fight for Equality by Any Means Necessary (BAMN), are likely to pursue an appeal with the Michigan Supreme Court citing ongoing concerns that the signatures placing the MCRI on the ballot were fraudulently collected with people being told that they were signing an initiative that would protect affirmative action.
