CAFTA Unlikely to be Voted on before Memorial Day

While proponents of CAFTA have been seeking a vote on the trade agreement before Memorial Day, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa says that he does not expect his committee to be able to move forward before the end of the month. According to an article in Washington Trade Daily, there are currently not enough votes in the Senate Finance Committee to move CAFTA. While Chairman Grassley and ranking Democrat Max Baucus have indicated that the agreement may be able to move out of Committee if the US Trade Representative's office addresses concerns about sugar, earlier Committee hearings. The House is currently waiting for the Senate to act on CAFTA before moving forward.
