CAFTA Legislation Coming the Week of June 13

May 24, 2005

According to an article published today in Congressional Quarterly Today, a mock markup of legislation implementing CAFTA is expected in the Senate Finance Committee during the week of June 13. While the mock markup is a draft of the final bill, indications are that Congressional leaders will move quickly to bring CAFTA to a vote before the July 4 recess. After action by the Senate, the House Ways and Means Committee will have their own markup with Committee Chair Bill Thomas telling Charles E. Grassley of the Finance Committee that "If they [Senate Finance Committee] go in the morning, we'll go in the afternoon," and that "If you go in the afternoon, we'll go the following morning." It is currently unknown whether the Senate Finance Committee has the votes to approve CAFTA.
