Hi OTRDriver,

You're right - the newer diesel engines ARE dramatically cleaner, because they are all being built with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). So the Alliance for Healthy Air is actually as enthusiastic about new diesel engines as you are! Our only concern is that vehicles built prior to 2007 - when the new standards went into effect - can last a really long time. I believe the median life span is 29 years! Because these vehicles do not have the newest diesel emissions technology - the DPF - they'll continue to pollute at extremely dangerous levels unless something is done. This is what the Alliance for Healthy Air is trying to do, in a constructive and productive way, with our campaign - to promote the use of DPFs, DOCs, anti-idling and other measures that can effectively reduce dangerous diesel emissions.

Several Michigan cities suffer more air pollution than most other places in our country, with Detroit consistently ranking in the Top Ten among cities with the worst air quality.

Just look at how hard Detroit is hit by this pollution -

<a href="http://www.allianceforhealthyair.org/whos-at-risk/" rel="nofollow">http://www.allianceforhealthyair.org/whos-at-risk/</a>

Because cleaning up diesel pollution is so effective, there is no reason NOT to take the sensible measures with older vehicles that have been addressed with the higher standards of newer vehicles.

If a simple filter can help clean our air by 90% - I am ALL FOR IT! Thank you Alliance for Healthy Air for tackling this issue!

Let's work together to clean it up. No one is being attacked here, rather this alliance would like to help pave the way for all vehicles to protect air quality while they operate.

Keep on Trucking Alliance for Healthy Air, I support the retrofits and your focus on our health!

Good thing they are focusing on her piano skills, and not the B/S job she did in Washington, It's such a shame to compromise your morals and convictions for the administration. But I guess we are all guilty of that at some point in our lives. Just too bad it was such a High Profile position for her. And as for the Economic Club in Grand Rapids, now there is a group of nobodies..

Re: Dow Chemical cleanup

Residents of the Tittabawassee area were largely ignorant of Dow's poisoning of the river with dioxin until 2002, when it was revealed through an FOIA request by the Lone Tree Council that the floodplain was polluted at 80 times the "acceptable" rate for the state of Michigan. Dow has repeatedly tried to suppress information, disseminate disinformation, and convince residents that the dioxin hazard is not that bad. But now not only fish in the river but also deer and wild turkeys in the area are found to be toxic. And it also appears that Dow is going to spin this out as long as it possibly can, as it has already created major delays in the clean-up process.

Several of my ancestors came to the Tittabawassee area from Germany to avoid arrest after their participation in the March Revolution of 1848. I have letters they wrote from their wilderness home, and they clearly regarded the area as a kind of paradise with everything they needed to live--clean water, good soil, plentiful game. One of my family graveyards overlooks the river. This doesn't make the circumstances more tragic, just more personal to me because I have family stories of what the area was like before it was savaged by corporate "interests."

This makes no sense at all, the diesel engines that are being produced under the 2010 emissions standards are actually cleaning the air, yes that's right the exhaust from these engines is cleaner than the air they take in. Now there is an interesting chain of events. So environmentalist get off you high horse, it's not the diesel engines that are polluting your air, it's the big business, who have much more lobbying power than you....

Considering Farm Machinery is not required to comply with Federal Regulations RE: Emissions compliance, what is the point? One tractor working the field one day emits more pollution than 50 cars or maybe more. Hm... so where is the justification? And lets not forget driving up the price of the product, supply and demand will dictate the cost just like everything else.. Case in point, Diesel fuel is currently less expensive than gasoline contrary to the last 8 years, now that's an interesting chain of events.

Obama Proposes New Regulations Of Financial Industry

In an interview Obama said this will be the biggest change to our financial system since "following" the Great Depression.

First off, he loves referring to the Great Depression in relation to our current recession any chance he gets.

Second, the major changes made previous where during and after the Great Depression, and many of them helped to extend it.

I guess he doesn't want to learn from our history, instead he would choose to repeat it.

Rep. Ehlers has repeatedly ignored his Conservative base. He believes he can get away with it. Mostly because he keeps getting voted in. Republicans in our area tend to vote straight party tickets. I'm one of them, but not any more. The election in 2010 will be the first time I split my ticket. I will not feel responsible for helping Rep Ehlers into another term. Maybe if a lib wins we can put a true Reagan Conservative up as an option in the following election.
