In the Fall 2005 issue of Equity, the publication of the Institute for Global Education (IGE), IGE’s Committee for Military Service Dialogue contributed a brief report detailing their activities with regard to the continued operation of military recruiters in the school. The group, which works to educate young people about military service and alternatives, listed the following as their accomplishments for the year:
- We had three Workshops during 2004-5 to help us learn more about the military and our rights as parents and grandparents as well as training five individuals to be counselors/listeners to our youth should a need arise.
- We sent a letter to principals in KISD High Schools with questions on a postcard to be returned to us. About a third of the schools responded. Since that time we have concentrated on the Grand Rapids High Schools. We also sent letters to faith communities offering to provide a program on military service for one of their meetings.
- We have begun a video project which will involve high school students who will be interviewed about their knowledge of alternatives to, and their feelings about, military service.
- We had a table at Career Day at Burton Middle School (April 27, 2005) with ideas about career alternatives to the military.
- We met twice with Grand Rapids Superintendent Bleke over the summer.
In 2006, the group plans to continue their activities by educating high school counselors about alternatives to military service and working to get an actual “opt-out” form given to parents at the beginning of each school year in order to simplify the Grand Rapids Public Schools' opt-out policy.
