BANCO Statement on the Conviction of Edward Pinkney

Benton Harbor community organizer Edward Pinkney was convicted of five felony voter fraud charges in court this week. Pinkney's group, BANCO, asserts that the charges are the result of a political prosecution designed to punish him for his campaigning against Whirlpool's plans to gentrify Benton Harbor.

Religious Organizations and the Fight against Showgirl Galleria

This week, the Black Hills Citizens for a Better Community announced they had raised $93,000 to cover the city's legal costs should the City of Grand Rapids decide to pursue an ordinance regulating adult "entertainment" such as the new Showgirl Galleria. However, the American Family Association of Michigan, a conservative religious group, has also sought to join the fight.

On Wednesday, the Grand Rapids Area Housing Continuum of Care unveiled its plan for ending homeless in Kent County. Interestingly, the speakers never mentioned the word "poverty" and the keynote speaker encourage the NPO and government officials present to avoid reading books on homelessness and instead read books on business managment.
