An anti-Islamic DVD distributed two Sundays ago in the Grand Rapids Press was funded by the Clarion Fund. The group says its goal is to focus on "the most urgent threat of radical Islam," but it discloses next to nothing about its funding and membership.

Grand Rapids Press Promotes Policy Conference

On Sunday, The Grand Rapids Press published an article touting an upcoming "policy making" conference that will feature business "leaders--including Dick DeVos, conservative columnist George Will, and a member of The Heartland Institute (a think-tank skeptical of global warming)--who will attempt to craft a pro-business agenda for the region. As would be expected, the Press story offers no criticism of the conference or any of its scheduled speakers.

Michigan Man Arrested for Allegedly Plotting to Use Molotov Cocktails at RNC Protests

Last Friday, the FBI arrested a man from Michigan for plotting to use Molotov cocktails at the Republican National Convention (RNC). However, while the government has used the arrest to lend credence to its effort to link protestors with terrorism, the media has largely ignored the widespread FBI surveillance of people planning to protest the RNC.

The Press Cites Group Advancing Global Warming Inaction and "Skepticism"

Yesterday the Grand Rapids Press reported on per-capita carbon emissions in the Grand Rapids-Wyoming area, but also saw fit to include a two paragraph mention of a "conservative" organization called Grassfire.org that advances highly questionable claims about global warming.

Media Downplays Antiwar Protest

On Saturday, a protest was held against the Iraq War. Attended by over 100 people, it was a decent sized protest by Grand Rapids standards. However, the local corporate media downplayed the protest and failed to take seriously the protest's main objective--to raise awareness about the number of lives lost as a result of the war.

Michigan Energy Companies Lobbying Legislators and the Public

You may have seen commercials on TV in recent weeks asking viewers to support so-called "Jobs and Energy" legislation in the State of Michigan. According to the Michigan Campaign Finance Network, the group behind the ads, the Michigan Jobs and Energy Coalition, has spent $1.9 million dollars to date to influence public opinion on future energy sources.

Veteran Cited in News Stories has a History of Outlandish Anti-Protestor Statements

In covering the antiwar protests in Grand Rapids over the past weekend, FOX 17 and the Grand Rapids Press both cited Denny Gillem, a military veteran and radio host at WOOD 1300 AM. However, both outlets failed to examine Gillem's past claims discrediting antiwar protestors.

Local Broadcast Media Reports on ELF Arsons

All three local broadcast news channels ran stories covering the charges in the Michigan State University ELF arsons that hyped the idea of "terrorism" and portrayed the arsons as crimes against society. The reporting basically mirrored the government's allegations in the case.
