The New "Enormous Omelet Sandwich" from Burger King

still

Analysis:

This news story is basically a free commercial for Burger King. Had independent voices from nutritionists, researchers, parents, etc. been included to provide context as to the pros and cons of fast food, this might have been a legitimate news story. Rather, WZZM 13 decided to run this story, using language that sounds as if it came from the Burger King marketing department, such as “Are you guys hungry yet?” and “surveys show that people want bigger sandwiches.” The news readers inject a few disparaging comments about the high fat sandwich, but these comments are largely just a reflection of the news readers personal preferences and do not in any meaningful sense provide balance or context to this commercial disguised as a news story.

Story:

News reader #1 – Around the 13 water cooler tonight, talk about the new king of breakfast sandwiches.

Newsreader #2 – Burger King is trying to attract a bigger breakfast crowd by offering this. What do they mean by bigger, well, you’ll find out.

The enormous omelet sandwich, it has two eggs, sausage, three strips of bacon, two slices of melted American cheese, on a big bun.

(laughter)

If it sounds fattening, it is. 750 calories, 47 grams of fat. It is of course more fattening than the Whopper

News reader #1 – Are you guys hungry yet? Burger King says that surveys show that people want bigger sandwiches, especially in the morning, but they say healthier choices are available including the other new breakfast sandwich, the Western Omelet Croissan’wich’, with only 320 calories and 17 grams of fat.

I have one piece of dry toast and a cup of coffee, that’s enough for me.

News reader #2 – I guess if you’re going to have half of your calories for the day, breakfast is a good time to have it.

Weatherman – Breakfast is the most important meal.

News reader #1 – I’ve got a stomach ache looking at that thing.

Sports reader – Supersize and everything these days.
