Analysis:
A pretty straight forward ad for Cingular in this so called news story. It is as if they ran this story straight from the Media Release from the giant wireless company, even telling viewers what it will cost per month. The video b-roll used appears to be from a Video News Release (VNR), but difficult to say for sure since it is not sourced. The news reader provides no context for viewers, particularly as it relates to what kind of company Cingular is and the political clout it has.
Also worth mentioning is Major League Baseball’s role in all of this. In recent years there has been some resistance to hyper-commercialism of Major League Baseball. Last year they did reject, due to fan pressure, the idea of putting Spiderman II ads on the bases. This deal with Cingular, while may not seem as bad as ads on bases, does further baseball’s dependency with corporate America.
