Cars that crash

still

Analysis:

This story is pure sensationalism. The footage they use, from a police car, shows an SUV crashing into a car as it is about to be lifted by a tow truck. The footage is so compelling that they show it twice! Viewers have to ask themselves how does a car crash out of state have any relevance for people in West Michigan?

Story:

WOOD TV 8 News reader - No one was seriously hurt when an out of control SUV slid across the Ohio Turnpike last week and hit a car April 2 near Toledo in a snow storm. This video was captured by a dash-board camera inside a State Patrol cruiser. The SUV slid sideways, hit the car, slamming it into the guardrail. The man driving the tow truck flipped over the rail, but amazingly was unhurt.

Dissecting the Local News is designed to provide ongoing examples of 1) how to think critically about how news is reported; 2) how commercial news provides almost no useful coverage that would allow the public to make informed decisions about what is happening in their community, and 3) how local news would rather entertain the public than hold both political and economic power accountable.
