Analysis:
This brief story from WOOD TV 8 essentially just announces that an "aviation summit" was held by Representative Ehlers in Grand Rapids. The story says next to nothing about what was said at the summit and it only includes a brief quote from Ehlers.
Interestingly, the story--while quoting Ehlers saying that "we are re-writing the laws that govern commercial aviation and also general aviation"--fails to mention that Ehlers is on the House Transportation and Infrastructure's Subcommittee on Aviation. Viewers should ask themselves if this story helped them understand what happened at the summit, while also asking if their understanding would have enhanced by disclosure of Ehlers position on the Subcommittee on Aviation. Similarly, would it have been beneficial for the story to mention that "air transport" interests are Ehlers' 3rd highest contributor to his election campaigns?
Story:
The physicist congressman brought aviators to the area to discuss solutions to air travel problems now and in the future.
Rep. Vern Ehlers (R-Grand Rapids) hosted the aviation summit Monday morning at Northern Jet Management. Pilots, businessmen and others talked about the future of commercial and private air travel in the state and across the nation.
As air travel grows, new burdens are placed on airlines, private pilots and air traffic controllers, and on the federal government that oversees them.
"Aviation is a big deal in Congress because we are re-writing the laws that govern commercial aviation and also general aviation," Ehlers said, "and there's been a lot of dispute about various parts of the bill."
