Analysis

More and more of what passes for election coverage on WOOD TV 8 are just excerpts from their Sunday morning talk show To The Point. The focus of this excerpt is about the recent Democratic choice of John Edwards for VP.

WOOD TV 8 reporter Rick Albin just uses a Republican claim to question Senator Edwards, a question that is never qualified. Viewers should ask themselves what exactly “Liberal” means. Viewers should also ask themselves why the questions posed to candidates are not outside the realm of partisan politics. As to be expected, the response from Senator Edwards about “values.” Words like, faith, family and responsibility are nice, but what do they mean? The only real measuring stick that viewers and voters have is with voting records and platforms….What candidates have done and what will they do.

Note: Rick Albin made a mistake early on in the story. He said “Senator John Edwards is quickly becoming a major voice for the Democrats as they head for their convention in New York…” The Democratic Convention is in Boston, not New York. The Republican Convention is in New York.

Transcript

WOOD TV 8 news reader – A day after president Bush visited Michigan’s upper peninsula the Democrats are talking about coming here as well. Today, 24 hour news 8 political reporter Rick Albin made his way from Marquette to Grand Rapids and spoke to the Democrats choice for Vice President.

Reporter – Senator John Edwards is quickly becoming a major voice for the Democrats as they head for their convention in New York, and as we close in on 100 days until the election. The Senator is featured in a new commercial for the Kerry/Edwards team and in it he talks about Senator Kerry and his strengths as a leader. In our conversation today he

addressed claims from the Bush/Cheney camp that the Democrats ticket is too liberal.

President Bush was in Michigan this week and he said that your running mate Senator Kerry is the most liberal member of the US Senate, he said that you are the 4th most liberal. The implication is that the Democratic ticket is to the left of many, if not most Americans. I’ll take a leap here and assume that you don’t agree with that assessment, so how do you counter that argument?

Sen. Edwards – “Well the reality is that having grown up the way I grew up in rural North Carolina I’ve grown up with the same values that most Americans have – faith, family, responsibility, giving opportunity to everybody, not just a few people. That’s what my life has been about, that is what I believe in, that’s what John Kerry believes in….”

Reporter – You can see my entire interview with Senator Edwards as well as a conversation with Senator John McCain, this Sunday morning on To The Point. You can see To the Point immediately following Meet the Press. Both interviews from different view points will be insightful as we head into the final 3 and one half months before this years run for the White House. From the election desk, I’m Rick Albin 24 Hour News 8.
