On the surface this seems like a useful news angle, but there are numerous things to consider about this story. WXMI claims that hotels are expecting to making $265 million dollars, but the figure is never sourced. The only person viewers hear besides the news reader is a business representative and when referring to those who think the city could lose money, they are referred to as “critics.”
There are several independent sources that have investigated the costs and expenses for the GOP convention. The Center for Public Integrity found that the Republican National Committee demanded that all kinds of services be provided to staff and delegates at tax payers expense, totally several million dollars. Even the New York City Comptroller estimates that the city will lose millions.

WXMI 17 News reader – Thousands of people are expected to visit the Big Apple for next week’s Republican convention and business owners are hoping they will spend big money, eat sleep and shop there is topping tonight’s Business Download. Restaurants around Madison Square Garden are gearing up for record crowds and hotels are hoping to bring in a record $265 million. But the crowds could also mean that some local shoppers will avoid some shops in the city and some companies are telling workers to not even bother to come in next week.
