WOOD Newsreader – The primary election is now just two weeks away and tonight we have another of the contested races for the state house. 24 hour news 8 political reporter Rick Albin introduces us to the candidates in the 75th district.
Reporter – The 75th district is another house district that will have new representation next January. Republican house speaker pro tem Jerry Kooiman is barred from running again due to term limits. The 75th district covers roughly the eastern half of Grand Rapids. Former city commissioner Robert Dean is the lone Democrat trying to capture the seat. Three Republicans, Sue Devries, Tim Doyle and Christian Meyer, are all vying for the chance to replace Kooiman as well. Each has his or her own reason for running for office.
Robert Dean – I’ve been president of the Grand Rapids school board, I was on the school board for six years. I’ve been a Grand Rapids City Commissioner for six years, president of the city commission twice. So it’s been a natural progression in serves of serving for me.
Tim Doyle – I wanted to start to focus on being more proactive, so I started to get involved in some community organizations like Habitat for Humanity, volunteers for service and some others. And it was because of that proactive side of things that I decided at this point to get involved and run for the state legislature.
Sue Devries – I work hard, I don’t discriminate; I’m honest, committed and ethical. I have strong business, government and non-profit and neighborhood leadership skills. I’m a moderate Republican and a proven leader.
Christian Meyer – There are three big issues facing the state right now. The number one issue of course is the economy and jobs. Number two is education, funding fairness, funding equity, funding efficiency, and number three is healthcare, affordability and access. And those are the themes of my campaign.
Reporter – Dean and the Republican that emerges in the primary will be joined by any third party candidates in the fall.
