DeVos says he won’t take governor’s salary

Analysis

The story is based upon a comment by gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos that if elected he will not take the governor’s salary. There is a response by a Granholm spokesperson, but the reporter does not ask DeVos what he means when he says “I have no intention of taking a salary from the citizens of Michigan?” The article also mentions that DeVos is a “major shareholder in the company,” but no amount is provided.

DETROIT (AP) — Multimillionaire Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos said he will not take the $177,000-a-year governor’s salary if he defeats Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm in the November election.

“I have no intention of taking a salary from the citizens of Michigan,” DeVos said during an interview Friday with The Detroit News’ editorial board.

Granholm has accepted a salary each year, but returned 5 percent of her pay this year and last year, and 10 percent in 2004. She will continue that practice if re-elected, spokeswoman Heidi Hansen said.

“She … needs that money to support her family,” Hansen said.

DeVos draws much of his wealth from Amway Corp., the direct marketing company founded by his father, Richard DeVos. The younger DeVos was president of the company from 1993-2002 and remains a major shareholder. Amway is now part of Ada-based Alticor Inc.
