Democratic Party presidential candidate Barack Obama is running his first television advertisement in Michigan. The ad, titled "Country I Love," is largely a "fluff" ad that offers little substance about what Obama would do as president or what he has done as a legislator. While it includes some relevant biographical details about growing up in a single-parent home, much of the ad touts vague and general themes--"strong families", "strong values," "working hard," etc.
The ad mentions three legislative accomplishments: passing a law moving people "from welfare to work," cutting taxes for working families, and extending healthcare for wounded troops. However, Factcheck.org reports that these claims are misleading. In an analysis of the ad, the nonpartisan group says that Obama's legislative claims are misleading. Two of the bills were passed in the Illinois legislature and the third--on wounded troops--did not have Obama's name on it as a sponsor or co-sponsor. Moreover, Factcheck.org points out that it is misleading for one legislator to take credit for legislation, as it is a collaborative process that involves many legislators.
