The Michigan Campaign Finance Network is reporting that television advertising spending is down compared to 2004, with only $7.2 million being spent thus far compared to $16.5 million in 2004. The presidential campaigns and other groups did not begin running ads as early as they did in 2004. Another major difference from 2004 is that third party “527 groups” have spent dramatically less then they did in the 2004 elections.
Across Michigan, the Obama campaign has spent $2.7 million, while the McCain campaign has spent $3.2 million. The Republican National Committee has also spent $963,000 on pro-McCain ads. Vets for Freedom has also spent $261,685 statewide on pro-McCain ads.
In West Michigan (Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo), spending on pro-McCain and McCain ads has almost exceed $1 million, while the Obama campaign has spent $567,275. It did not begin running ads until almost a month after the McCain campaign.
