Graffiti in Guatemala City

Most organizations have closed down for the holidays, so I spent the day getting photos of graffiti in the city. This is just a small sample of the hundreds of statements and murals that can be found most anywhere in the country.

"Long Live Gerardi! Gerardi lives in the Guatemalan people!" Bishop Gerardi spearheaded an investigation into the crimes committed against the Guatemala people. Hundreds of people were sent out
to interview thousands of people. Two days after he presented the findings in a report called Never Again! he was assasinated.

"No to CAFTA" This statement is the most recent of much of the graffiti.

"CAFTA = more maquilas"

"Justice" - Signed by the group HIJOS. HIJOS are children of the disappeared.

The last 3 photos are from one of their murals. This mural shows the US financed boot of death, with crosses identifying towns that were wiped out by the military. We plan on documenting all their murals into a short video and talking with members of HIJOS about the importance of art and resistance.
