What is Really Going on in Haiti

It has been nearly impossible to get accurate information about the situation in Haiti from the corporate media, with most of the Haiti reporting heavily distorted. MADRE has prepared a “backgrounder” on the situation in Haiti that explains what is happening and provides some historical context. Democracy Now is reporting that the United States has armed the paramilitaries and is likely giving logisitcal support.

In keeping with their anti-immigration stance, the Bush Administration has announced that refugees from Haiti will be denied entry to the United States, even as the Haitian president has warned of a possible refugee crisis in the coming weeks .

UPDATE (03.01.04):

Democracy Now is reporting that Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was “abducted” by the United States.

Stop the Presses: George W. Bush Says Something True

At a campaign speech on Monday, President George W. Bush made the following joke:

The Democratic field, Mr. Bush said, is “for tax cuts and against them. For NAFTA and against NAFTA. For the Patriot Act and against the Patriot Act. In favor of liberating Iraq and opposed to it. And that’s just one senator from Massachusetts.

Sometimes jokes contain a lot of truth…

In keeping up with today’s light-hearted theme, we offer a special tribute to Saddam Hussein called “Thanks for the Memories.” It is a short video about the special relationship between the United States and Saddam Hussein, set to the classic Bing Crosby tune.

Grand Rapids Press Fails to Report Local Connections to Taco Bell Boycott

Today the Grand Rapids Press ran an AP wire story about the upcoming “2004 Taco Bell Truth Tour”. While it is good that the Press finally had some coverage of the low wages paid to people picking tomatoes for Taco Bell in Immokalee, Florida (conditions have been described by outsiders as tantamount to slavery) and the farmworker-led and student-supported movement against Taco Bell, the paper failed to make connections to local campaigns. A Grand Valley State University student group, Students Against Sweatshops has been working on the Taco Bell boycott for three years by educating and organizing students in order to remove Taco Bell from campus.

Nader Runs Again

Much to the chagrin of the Democratic party hierarchy and the “anyone but Bush” crowd, this weekend Ralph Nader announced his candidacy for President. Unlike in 2000 when we was the Green Party candidate, this time around he will run as an independent. This means Nader will have to gather 64,000 signatures in each state in order to get on the ballot. According to an article in today’s New York Times, the democratic party will “bring lawsuits to knock Mr. Nader off state ballots.”

Once again, Nader is running to spotllight the increasing corporate control of both political parties. His critics claim he is a “spoiler” who is increasing Bush’s chances at getting reelected. In response to Nader’s assertion that there is little difference between the two major parties, this is what Democratic frontrunner John Kerry had to say:

>

“That’s what he said with respect to Bush and Gore, and I think it was pretty clear to most Americans that the difference was night and day. “I intend to speak to all Americans. If people want to beat George Bush badly, and that’s what’s at stake here, they’ll see that I’m speaking to concerns that Ralph Nader and other people have.”

>

There has been a deluge of stories arguing that Nader’s 2004 candidacy is a “spoiler” one that will cost the Democratic candidate the election, as in 2000 when Gore “lost Florida by only 537 votes.” While some people who would have voted for the Democratic candidate may vote for Nader, covering Nader as a spoiler and blaming him for what happened in Florida in 2000 ignores the much larger story to come out of the 2000 election—widespread voter disenfranchisement when large numbers of voters were “misidentified” as felons. The media should be covering DBT’s disqualification of voters in the 2000 election and Nader’s platform not the fact that Nader “cost Gore the election.” Incidently, some 30,000 votes were cast for third party candidates other than Nader in Florida, but you never hear claims that the Workers World Party’s 1,804 votes cost Gore the election.

So what are the differences between Kerry and the Republicans? According to Alexander Cockburn and Jeffery St. Clair from the online magazine Counterpunch, not much.

“Kerry agrees with Bush about the tax cuts. He agrees with him about the Patriot Act. He agrees with him on trade. He agrees with him on the war. Why change horses, Bush will ask the American people. “I can manage things better,” Kerry will respond. What else can he say? He’s never once, in three senate terms, offered legislation to inconvenience the “special interests” at which he’s lately launched a few pop-gun attacks. “Over the course of his senate career,” writes Charles Lewis of the Center for Public Integrity, “Kerry has not been averse to taking campaign cash from the companies and firms with a direct interest in his work. Since ’95, he raised more than 30 million for his various campaigns, most of it from industries such as finance and telecommunication companies (which are overseen by the senate committees he served) and the law and lobby firms that represent them.” (Kerry: He’s Peaking, Already)

Anti-Capitalist Group Forming in Grand Rapids

From the MichiganIMC:

A new anti-capitalist group is forming in Grand Rapids and is looking for members and new ideas. We want to expand the presence of anti-capitalist ideas in the culture and show that it is possible to create alternatives to capitalism within the framework of the existing society, while using the alternatives as a way of building power to challenge capitalism on a larger scale. Furthermore, we are committed to working towards achieving concrete gains and winning victories–it is time to move beyond simply being the most militant at summit protests or having the most radical analysis–we need to start working to transform our local communities and taking action.

We are merely calling for the formation of a group and have no set plans. We are trying to do this in the most inclusive and participatory manner possible, and consequently, structure, organization, and projects will be determined by the participants.

GRIID Releases Study on Local News Coverage of Israel/Palestine

The Grand Rapids Institute for Information Democracy (GRIID) has just completed a study of local TV and print news coverage of Israel/Palestine. The 90-day study was conducted from early August through early November 2003. Considering that many Americans still rely on local news as their main news source, it is reasonable to say that the public perception of Israel/Palestine is as follows:

  • The problem stems from a dispute between two groups that can’t get along
  • Palestinians are terrorists and Israel is defending itself
  • People in the Middle East are violent
  • the US role is to try and bring peace

GRIID acknowledges that these conclusions are far from the truth, but think it is important to recognize what the public perception about Israel/Palestine and the US role in that region is.

GRIID hopes that people working on this issue will find the study useful in developing a strategy of public education. The report can be downloaded from our website at http://www.griid.org/pdfs/roadmap_to_nowhere.pdf

Attorney General John Ashcroft Sued, Singing Career in the Future?

Attorney General John Ashcroft was sued yesterday by a federal prosecuter who says that the Justice Department has exaggerated its success in “the war on terror” and has hindered prosecutors in the field.

With this latest lawsuit and growing criticism of the USA PATRIOT Act, things are looking bad for Ashcroft, but should he be forced out of Washington, he has other career options. Ashcroft is also a budding singer, having composed a patriotic song called “Let the Eagles Soar.” Perhaps he will be joined by Trent Lott, another washed up politician who was a part of Ashcroft’s Singing Senators musical group. We are fairly confident they could cut into Lee Greenwood’s market share.

We couldn’t make this up: Video of John Ashcroft Singing “Let the Eagles Soar”

Howard Dean Drops Out of Race, Media to Blame?

Howard Dean announced that he is dropping out of the race for the Democratic Party nomination, ending a campaign that took him from front-runner and media star to media laughing stock. Howard Dean was never a progressive or left candidate, despite the media’s constant labeling him as such. Nevertheless, it is interesting how the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) and much of the corporate media viewed Howard Dean as a threat to their power. The DLC issued harsh criticisms after Dean called them “the Republican Wing of the Democratic Party” and the media’s coverage of Dean was more critical than other candidates–playing his post-Iowa Caucus speech (at least the part where he screamed) 633 times in the 4 days after the Iowa Caucus, according to a study by the Center for Media and Public Affairs.

There is a good article on Alternet titled The Assasination of Howard Dean that argues Dean was considered a threat to the DLC, media, and big business and that was the reason for his failure. An older article, The Media vs. Howard Dean, looks at the media’s role in bringing down Dean’s campaign.

Local Action for Equal Marriage Rights for Gays and Lesbians

A local activist from Grand Valley State Universtiy has contacted Media Mouse looking for help in spreading the word about an upcoming action in support of equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians. Media Mouse is happy to oblige. Here is what the action organizer writes:

This Friday (the 20th) at 10:00 a hopefully large group of us are planning an act of civil disobedience at the Kent County Clerk. We’re going to gather in same-sex pairs and request marriage licenses as a protest against the current anti-gay restrictions on marriage.

We’d like as many people as possible to attend this demonstration in same-sex pairs and, one couple at a time, request licenses. We’re suggesting that people gather their own groups and leave Grand Valley around 9:30 to arrive downtown by 10:00. We’re also hoping most people will print off the marriage forms and bring the $20 fee, just for the hell of it. Forms, information, and directions can all be found here:

http://www.accesskent.com/living/legal/clerks_marriage.htm

We’ll be contacting the local newspaper, tv stations, radio, etc. We won’t begin contacting the media until late Wednesday and Thursday, just so the event is given more immediate coverage and attention. Anyone who cares to contact any media on their own Thursday should feel free as well.

Most everyone who plans on attending now is straight. Remember, discrimination affects everyone, so gay and lesbian people, their friends and family, and compassionate and active individuals should all have an interest.

Please spread the word, find a fiance (or attend alone and find one there), and we’ll see you Friday.

Thanks!
