On Tuesday evening at the Grand Rapids city commission meeting, Citizens for a Safe and Free Grand Rapids introduced a resolution affirming civil liberties and opposing certain provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act. Citizens for a Safe and Free Grand Rapids, a group of concerned citizens and organizations, have been conducting a campaign to educate the public on the dangers that the USA PATRIOT Act poses to civil liberties. Over the last four months SFSFGR has been present at many local events and has collected over 1000 signatures in support of their Anti PATRIOT ACT resolution. These signatures were presented to the city commission at the Tuesday night meeting. Mayor George Heartwell voiced interest in pursuing the matter further and promised to hold a public forum on the issue. Several of the commissioners also endorsed the idea of a public forum on the USA PATRIOT act. Opinions expressed during the public comment section of the meeting were unanimously opposed to the USA PATRIOT ACT. SFSFGR will follow up with the Mayor to ensure that the promised public forum happens and will also continue their educational and signature gathering campaign.
