Rally against Condi Rice at MSU

(This post copied from Michigan IMC)

On May 7th, Condoleezza Rice will be speaking at 1pm at the Michigan State University convocation. A coalition of student and community groups are Calling for Mass Demonstrations in response.

Rally Against Rice on May 7th!

10:30am-Gather at Valley Court Park in E. Lansing (Behind Beaners at 270 W. Grand River)

11:30am-Arrive at the Breslin Center where Rice will be speaking

There will be an alternative graduation with speakers, music and fun after the demonstration

Reasons to Oppose Condoleeza Rice’s visit include:

-The undemocratic process by which Dr. Rice was invited to speak at MSU, without consultation of the Board of Trustees, the MSU community or the graduating seniors.

-The conversion of the MSU Convocation ceremony into a forum with a political agenda.

-Dr. Rice’s lack of cooperation with 9.11 investigations.

-Dr. Rice’s support for the internationally recognized illegal war in Iraq.

-Dr. Rice’s opposition to affirmative action.

-Dr. Rice’s stance on US immigration laws.

-Dr. Rice’s support for the Patriot Act.

-The Bush Administration’s treatment of Arab Americans and Muslims.

-Dr. Rice’s support of the continued build up of nuclear weapons.

Protest Bush in Kalamazoo

“President” George W. Bush will be in Kalamazoo MI on Monday, May 3 at 4pm at Wings Stadium. The folks at KNOW (Kalamazoo Non-violent Opponents to War) have made the following plans:

KNOW PLANS FOR BUSH PROTEST IN KALAMAZOO on Monday, May 3

We plan to have two major protest sites here in Kalamazoo:

Site 1: KNOW will meet at the The UAW Local 488 office located at 3731 Covington. Parking at the UAW lot, in front of and behind the building. It is just around the corner from Wings Stadium (about 300 ft). The UAW site can be reached from Sprinkle Road by heading west on Covington (there is a Wendy’s on the corner of Sprinkle and Covington for pit stops).

If you are coming from the east on I-94 and are worried that the Sprinkle Rd. exit might be blocked off (we don’t know) the UAW can also be reached via 35th St exit from I-94: go south to light at MN Ave., turn right and continue west, jog left on a 90 degree turn then turn right (west again) on N Ave. Continue on N. Ave until you intersect Sprinkle Rd. Turn right on Sprinkle, left on Covington to UAW. Sprinkle can be reached from the west by taking Kilgore Rd. exit on I-94 and going east on Kilgore to intersect Sprinkle, then left to Covington and left on Covington to UAW.

Also, if you are approaching from downtown Kalamazoo, Route 8-Egleston bus travels to Covington, to Sprinkle and back downtown again. It may not run if they block Sprinkle at I-94. On Monday, call 337-8222 to find out if it will be running.

KNOW’s theme at Wings is to be the Iraq war and the deaths that have occurred there. We will have a flag draped coffin, Code Pink’s Peace Mama, Veterans for Peace, and Women in Black. Signs stating our opposition to the war and the fact that the war is making all of us less safe, here and abroad, are appropriate. “Stop the Lies” might be an appropriate rubric to cover all issues, from militarism to the economy to the environment.

Everyone needs to be well dressed (we want to avoid the media picturing us as hippies, so shed that hippie stuff for a few hours and wear your “Sunday best”).

Tickets say “doors open at 1:30, please arrive no later than 3:30″. Bush is scheduled to speak at 4:20. Road and overpass closures could begin early and increase by 3:30.

Some protesters will be arriving as early as noon, and we strongly suggest that you plan to arrive no later than 1:30. Bush has been confirmed as arriving at 4 pm. and Bush organizers want all people inside Wings by 3:30 pm. You might want to bring a snack and some water.

If you find yourself blocked from entry to the protest site, gather together with others as close to Wings Stadium as you can manage; but do not trespass on private property. Stay on public property or right of way (such as sidewalks and roadsides).

Many organizations will be participating in this rally, including the Democratic Party, the Green Party, Women in Black, Veterans for Peace, the Sierra Club, Code Pink, Students for a Sustainable Earth, and many other peace and justice organizations.

Site 2: Our second site is located at 2600 Vincent Drive. Take the Oakland Dr. exit off I-94, then Oakland north to Vincent (only a few hundred feet–you’ll see a park-and-drive lot on your left at the intersection. West (left) on Vincent to the Episcopal Cathedral Christ the King (you’ll see it directly in front of you). From central Kalamazoo, take Oakland Dr. south to Vincent and turn right. People should be there by 2:30. The focus of the demonstration will be the billboard-sized KNOW sign, very visible from I-94, IRAQ- HOW MANY DEATHS, and dozens of silhouettes of people, set up to symbolize and commemorate all deaths from the war. Parking at the Cathedral Christ the King.

If you plan on going from the Grand Rapids area and would like to carpool, people will be meeting at the parking lot of the Grand Rapids Community Media Center, 711 Bridge St. at 1:30 – 2:00.

New Video Clips from Media Mouse

Here are a couple of video clips produced by Media Mouse Members.

The first clip is about the one year anniversary of the “end of major combat operation is Iraq:”

The second clip is a rather sarcastic look at the 2004 elections:

WMD found in Iraq

Despite the corporate press’s unwillingness to report on it, WMD have been found in Iraq. In fact, they have been there since the first Gulf War and are responsible for thousands of deaths. The reason they have not been reported on is that they are part of the US military arsenal. Since 1991 the US Military has fired 2,700 tons of depleted uranium ammunition in Iraq. Despite claims by the Pentagon that DU (depleted uranium) is relatively harmless, there is a growing body of evidence that it is a cancer causing agent and a possible cause of the “gulf war syndrome”. DU ammunition was, and continues to be used in the current Iraq war, despite the fact that in a 2002 report the UN declared DU ammunition to be a “weapon of mass destruction”.

Not surprisingly, the mainstream media in the US have been incredibly slow to pick up this story. A quick Google search of the phrase “depleted uranium iraq” yielded plenty of articles about DU, but only one of the top forty hits, an article from the Christian Science Monitor, was from a mainstream US media source. Unlike the US press, the BBC ran several stories about DU in Iraq.

If you would like to do something about the use of Depleted Uranium by the US military, check out the Campaign Against Depleted Uranium. Also, if there are any gulf war veterans here is West Michigan that believe they are victims of DU poisoning, Media Mouse would be interested in posting their testimony.

Grand Rapids Colombian Support Network

In the fall of 2000 a Grand Rapids chapter of the Colombian Support Network was created by a group of concerned local citizens. For the first year good progress was made and the chapter organized seveal events and was able to bring two Colombian speakers to Grand Rapids. After Sept. 11 2001, the local CSN chapter, like many social justice movements around the country, suffered as members shifted focus to resisting the US military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq. With the recent visit of Father Jaokim from Colombia this April, there is renewed interest in restarting the Grand Rapids Chapter. In order to do this, the Grand Rapids chapter needs new people to get involved and to assume leadership roles within the organization. Media Mouse has agreed to help promote GR CSN and will be posting regular updates about Colombia.

The Barren Landscape of Local Radio

The local radio landscape in Grand Rapids is pretty bleak. As with most radio markets in the United States, there has been a massive consolidation in station ownership ever since the 1996 Telecommunications Act. One of the negative effects of consolidation of radio ownership has been a decreased availability of local news on radio. The majority of radio stations in Grand Rapids belong to three large radio conglomerates, Regent Communications, Citadel, and Clear Channel. Only one of these stations, WOOD 1300 AM, provides any local news coverage. As far as to the quality of WOOD 1300′s news coverage, a quick examination of their daytime schedule of Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, and Sean Hannity gives a hint as to the station’s bias. The public radio stations do not provide any significant local news coverage either, relying mostly on programming piped in from NPR. Nor do the few other local commercial stations or the publicly funded WYCE run any locally produced news.

As to variety, the post-telecommunications act consolidation has led to the further homogenization of the music played on the radio. Also we have seen an increase in obnoxious syndicated morning shows, the commercial cooptation of rock/punk and the disappearance of rap/hip hop from the Grand Rapids airwaves. The most egregious example of the rebel ethos of rock and punk music being warped into vehicle for promoting sexism, militarism and commercialism would be WKLQ’s Ron and Don show. Their morning show and website basically consist of a very limited variety of corporate rock, “support the troops” style militarism and soft core pornography.

What you cannot find on the airwaves here in Grand Rapids is Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now . We here at Media Mouse would encourage people to contact the local Public and publicly funded radio stations and demand both more locally produced news and Democracy Now.

March for Women’s Lives in DC Draws over 500,000

Sunday’s March for Women’s Lives was attended by over 500,000 people according to reports in the corporate media and estimates from police officials, making it one of the largest demonstrations in US history. Indymedia has a good article on the march.

Additional coverage can be found on dc.indymedia.org.

“One Shot, one Kill”

In their battle with resistance fighters in Iraq, the US army is increasingly relying on snipers to pinpoint and kill their opponents. “It’s a sniper’s dream,” says a US marine sniper in a Baltimore Sun article. “You can go anywhere and there are so many ways to fire at the enemy without him knowing where you are.” Said another Marine corporal sniper, “Sometimes a guy will go down, and I’ll let him scream a bit to destroy the morale of his buddies, then I’ll use a second shot.” “As a sniper, your goal is to completely demoralize the enemy. I couldn’t have asked to be in a better place. I just got lucky: to be here at the right time and with the right training.”

So what exactly are they shooting at? According to American writer Rahul Mahajan, one thing they are shooting at is ambulances. From his weg log Empire Notes, Mahajan reports:

Al-Nazzal told us about ambulances being hit by snipers, women and children being shot. Describing the horror that the siege of Fallujah had become, he said, “I have been a fool for 47 years. I used to believe in European and American civilization.

I had heard these claims at third-hand before coming into Fallujah, but was skeptical. It’s very difficult to find the real story here. But this I saw for myself. An ambulance with two neat, precise bullet-holes in the windshield on the driver’s side, pointing down at an angle that indicated they would have hit the driver’s chest (the snipers were on rooftops, and are trained to aim for the chest). Another ambulance again with a single, neat bullet-hole in the windshield. There’s no way this was due to panicked spraying of fire. These were deliberate shots designed to kill the drivers.

Grand Rapids Activist Threatened by Police

This past weekend, local Grand Rapids activist Glenn Freeman was harrassed by the GRPD for wearing a George W. mask in public. This is how Glenn decribes the encounter:

Today on the streets of Grand Rapids I was wearing a George W Bush mask, along with a T-Shirt which reads “Operation Enduring Stupidity” and contains a photo of George W Bush. The weather was great and I knew it would make lots of people laugh (and think) … also, I was collecting petition signatures in order to get Ralph Nader on the ballot here in Michigan.

Anyway, late in the day I was told to take off my mask by a Grand Rapids Police officer. So I took the mask off immediately and asked why I had been asked to remove the mask. The officer told me not to talk back and to simply do what he said, and also to not make a scene. Seeing that a large audience had formed I again asked the same question … I was then body-searched, handcuffed and placed into his squad car.

Once in cuffs and sitting in the back of his car, the officer informed me it was illegal to wear a mask (even in public in the daytime, and on the sidewalk) in the City of Grand Rapids. So I asked him if this ordinance was enforced on Halloween and if he had arrested various other people in masks that I see walking around Grand Rapids on a daily basis …WZZM-TV13′s “Weather Balloon” man, Bank One’s “1″ man, or WOOD Radio’s “Bear”, practicing Muslim women, etc. … many masks are worn on a daily basis in downtown Grand Rapids … then, he really got steamed.

Only after his 2 other police buddies left (they all gave him the thumbs up after they found out what happened) did I mention I have lots of media contacts and that he was making a very big mistake … only then did this SS-style officer decide not to arrest me and let me go without incident. So, I put my mask on again (the officer acted like he did not see me do this) and I walked back home with my mask on (about a mile away). End of story.
