Upcoming Independent Documentaries in Grand Rapids

While Micheal Moore’s Farenheit 9/11 has gotten a considerable amount of attention recently, there are a number of other good independent documentaries playing soon in Grand Rapids that provide a more detailed examination of many of the issues raised in the film. The following films will be playing at the UICA located at 41 Sheldon Blvd SE in downtown Grand Rapids:

UNPRECEDENTED – August 16

Unprecedented is the riveting story about the battle for the Presidency in Florida and the undermining of democracy in America. It is a disturbing picture of an election marred by suspicious irregularities, electoral injustices, and sinister voter purges in a state governed by the winning candidate’s brother. George W. Bush stole the presidency of the United States, and got away with it.

Following the movie there will be a discussion and an action kit will be distributed with information on what people can do now to work towards free and fair elections.

HIJACKING CATASTROPHE – September 13

Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear & the Selling of American Empire examines how a radical fringe of the Republican Party has used the trauma of the 9/11 terror attacks to advance a pre-existing agenda to radically transform American foreign policy while rolling back civil liberties and social programs at home.

The documentary places the Bush Administration’s false justifications for war in Iraq within the larger context of a two-decade struggle by neo-conservatives to dramatically increase military spending in the wake of the Cold War, and to expand American power globally by means of military force.

THE CORPORATION – September 20

Since the late 18th century American legal decision that the business corporation organizational model is legally a person, it has become a dominant economic, political and social force around the globe. This film takes an in-depth psychological examination of the organization model through various case studies. What the study illustrates is that in the its behaviour, this type of “person” typically acts like a dangerously destructive psychopath without conscience. Furthermore, we see the profound threat this psychopath has for our world and our future, but also how the people with courage, intelligence and determination can do to stop it.

CONTROL ROOM – October 18

A chronicle which provides a rare window into the international perception of the Iraq War, courtesy of Al Jazeera, the Arab world’s most popular news outlet. Roundly criticized by Cabinet members and Pentagon officials for reporting with a pro-Iraqi bias, and strongly condemned for frequently airing civilian causalities as well as footage of American POWs, the station has revealed (and continues to show the world) everything about the Iraq War that the Bush administration did not want it to see.
