This Saturday, February 19, the Confronting Empire working group is hosting a video screening and discussion on direct action. The group will be showing We Interrupt this Empire, a film about the direct actions that shutdown the business district of San Francisco as the United States began its invasion of Iraq. We Interrupt this Empire looks at the variety of tactics that fall under the rubric of direct action and how diverse tactics were able to work together to bring downtown San Francisco to a standstill.
Following the film there will be a discussion about direct action and its possible applications in relation to local antiwar organizing. The discussion will be directed towards the upcoming second anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, potentially in terms of organizing efforts targeting local companies with military contracts for weapons components used in Iraq.
The video screening and discussion will take place at 1:00pm at the Wealthy Street Theatre (1130 Wealthy St) in the Wealthy Theatre Board Room. The discussion is open to people who have a variety of understandings and experiences with direct action and there will be people on-hand who have experience organizing and participating in direct actions at both the local and national level.
Following the direct action discussion, the group will continue talking about organizing around local companies with military contracts, the Central American Free Trade Agreement, and sex-ploitation clubs in downtown Grand Rapids.
