We reported 10 days ago that the government of Guatemala ratified CAFTA, despite significant public opposition. Since then there has been ongoing protests to what many in Guatemala see as a form of selling off Guatemala to foreign investors. The protests have been met with tremendous repression, and 2 people were shot and killed in the Guatemalan state of Huehuetenango. Photos of the demonstration and violence can be viewed online from an Indy media source in Guatemala. Even Journalists Marielos Monzon and Gabriel Mazzarovich covering this issue have been receiving death threats for just reporting on the anti-CAFTA protests according to Amnesty International. The Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA) is calling for Actions of solidarity by contacting the Guatemalan Embassy and demand an end to the repression of Anti-CAFTA protesters.
