Michigan Organizing Project Press Conference on the Real ID Act
Posted: May 9th, 2005 | Author: edcutlip |The Michigan Organizing Project’s (MOP) Immigration Task Force has scheduled a press conference for this Thursday, May 12 at 1:30pm at St. Andrews Cathedral. The press conference has been organized to bring attention to the Real ID Act, which will likely be made into law soon, as well as an immigration reform bill that is expected to be presented to Congress within the month. The Real ID Act will take the away the state’s control of driver’s licenses and give the authority to the federal government, a move that will require a social security card in order to get a license. This move will primarily affect the five million undocumented immigrants in the United States; who will all be ineligible to receive a license once the Real ID Act becomes law.
Michigan is currently one of the eleven states where undocumented immigrants can obtain licenses.
