The Confronting Empire group has announced plans for a protest to coincide with President Bush’s May 21st visit to Calvin College. The protest will begin with a march at 1:00pm that will start at the corner of Lake Eastbrook Blvd and the Eastbelt Line and head towards Calvin College at the intersection of Burton & the East Beltline.
A flyer for the protest is available and people are asked to make copies and distribute them around town. Additional information about the protest and ways to plug-in beyond the standard sign-holding can be found in their organizing update posted on the Michigan IMC.
Given the lack of info available about Bush’s visit, the Confronting Empire group is working under the assumption that security will be tight and that Calvin College Campus will be off limits except to students and their families. If anyone knows any more about the security situation, please contact the group.
While Media Mouse has been contacted by several Calvin students, we are unaware of any actions planned by graduating students or family during the commencement. There is an on-line discussion list for Calvin students called “Our Commencement is Not Your Platform” in which some protest ideas are discussed but we do not know if any of them will actually result in an action.
The West Michigan Justice and Peace Coalition has also announced that they will be having a planning meeting this Friday to discuss their response to Bush’s visit. Anyone interested in learning more about the Coalition’s plans or about the meeting should contact the Coalition through their webpage.
