The corporate media has been reporting on the recent protests in Afghanistan and elsewhere by adopting the government version of events, that these protests are the result of an erroneous story by Newsweek magazine. In response to pressure from the Bush administration, Newsweek has issued a retraction of the story. What has not been widely reported in the “mainstream” press is the fact that Newsweek is not the first news source to report on the alleged abuse of the Koran as an interrogation technique by the US military. Nor has the press reported that these protests are not just the result of a single Newsweek article, but rather a response to the continuing occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq as well as the mistreatment of prisoners.
