The Holland Education Association (HEA), an organization representing teachers in Holland, Michigan, is using a web log to track contract negotiations and disseminate information about the status of the negotiations. The web log is allowing the HEA to communicate directly with both the teachers it represents and the public, supplementing the regular media coverage that the group has been receiving. This has allowed the Association to counter the occasional bad news report, as well as provide information about what happens during the negotiating sessions.
Teachers in Holland have been working without a contract since August 31 due to the Holland Public Schools demand that employees contribute to their own health care costs. The teachers have threatened to strike if the Board imposes a contract without negotiating.
