New Military Recruiting Tactics in Light of Missed Goals

The military, after suffering one of its worst years on record for recruitment, has implemented a number of new tactics and approaches to recruiting.

The Army has changed its rules with regard to the populations it targets, with new rules that allow the recruiting of high school dropouts and the enlistment of people up to the age of 42. The Congress is also considering implementing a $1,000 “finders fee” where soldiers could earn money for referrals. Moreover, the military, which began using video games as a recruiting tool in 2002, has expanded to other technologies, offering potential recruits free songs on Apple’s iTunes in exchange for their information and has begun posting advertisements on the popular CraigsList website. Additionally, the military has recently targeted evacuees from Hurricane Katrina.
