95 US Soldiers Killed in Iraq Last Month

In one of the deadliest months of the Iraq War, 95 US soldiers were killed in October with more than 300 wounded. A Colonel, the highest-ranking officer to lose their life in Iraq was also killed in October. October was the fourth deadliest month for US soldiers since the war began and the second most deadly month of the year.

Many members of the military and policy analysts have stated that recent insurgent activity in Iraq is “spiking” and will likely drop-off in the coming weeks. Much of this talk has been based on the notion that the recent Constitutional referendum will lessen the insurgency, especially with news that two Sunni Arab coalitions plan to participate in the December parliamentary elections. However, Sunnis participating in the political process have made ending the occupation one of their primary political goals. A prominent Sunni leader, Hussein al Falluji stated that:

“Our political program will focus more on getting the Americans out of Iraq. Our message to the American administration is clear: get out of Iraq or set a timetable for withdrawal or the resistance will keep slaughtering your soldiers until Judgment Day.”
